George Winston At The Flagstar Strand In Ponitac at Flagstar Strand Theatre For The Performing Arts
World-renowned pianist George Winston returns to Michigan to play the fabulous Flagstar Strand Theatre in downtown Pontiac (a 2 Stones Events production). Tickets, priced $25-$55. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
This concert will be a drive for Gleaners Food Bank, and attendees are asked to bring a canned good to the show (drop boxes will be at the entrance). Of course, cash donations will also be accepted. Also, George will donate 100% of the proceeds from his merchandise sales to Gleaners.
The Strand was built in 1921 and fully restored last year. It seats around 850 and will be a gorgeous setting for George Winston to unleash on a 9-foot Steinway.
Winston was born in Michigan in 1949 and grew up mainly in Montana as well as Mississippi and Florida. He is best known for his solo piano recordings; several of his albums from the early 1980s have sold millions of copies each.
He plays in three styles: the melodic approach he developed that he calls "rural folk piano"; stride piano, primarily inspired by Thomas "Fats" Waller and Teddy Wilson; and his primary interest, New Orleans R&B piano, influenced by James Booker, Professor Longhair, and Henry Butler.
